I definitely agree that, as parents, we need to be aware and give our children the tools to deal with stressful situations. But I think we also would be wise to examine our current educational system and ask how we can make it kinder to children and more respectful of them as individuals.

@ChildLight Yoga: Thanks for linking to this post! It's all about eduction.

@Terry: You're right. Unfortunately, students who do the right thing are often penalized for the behaviour of others.

@Justine: We teachers also have to remind ourselves not to add to students' stress, which we can sometimes do inadvertently!

Thanks everyone :)

What a great post - As Founder of ChildLight Yoga and Yoga 4 Classrooms, I educate children and their families about dealing with stress and anxiety from the inside out, but very much appreciate these strategies for addressing environmental factors. I'm going to link to this from our blog at www.thekidsyogaresource.com

I agree with mentioning Authority as a source of stress. In many ways, students that follow the rules and work hard at school are subjected to the stresses that invade classrooms when other students misbehave.

It's great advice, Suzannah. As a teacher, it's good to be reminded of these things so we can avoid allowing a child's stress levels to increase to the point where it interferes with his or her learning! Thanks!

@ Scott: Thank you:) I hope this advice comes in handy as your child grows.

@ ZFH Readers:
A reader emailed to ask about tips on test-taking. Here are the suggestions I sent him, for anyone who's interested:

*When studying a unit you know will end with a test, review the relevant subject matter often so information and skills are always fresh in your mind.

*Make your own flash cards to help you remember facts or formulas.

*Print off or make your own practice tests at home and time yourself completing them ahead of time.

*Be prepared. Ensure you bring all the tools you will need (plus back-up pens/pencils).

*Be aware of what material will be on the test. Teachers should be able to provide students with an outline of key areas to study.

*Make sure the teacher is reviewing key concepts in class, and taking time to clarify areas of concern for students. If not, request it.

*In the event of real anxiety or special needs, discuss options for accommodation with the classroom teacher. For example, a student may actually be allowed access to certain materials during the test, or they might be given a longer amount of time to complete the test.

Hope these are helpful!

Great post. Although I only have a 2 year old right now, and one on the way, these tips are some very good insights that I hope I'll keep as my children get older.
