Hey this is a really interesting post. Do you have any material from developmental psychology where the issue of raising socially conscious children is investigated rigorously and scientifically? :)

Good post thanks.

Also worth bearing in mind how to best praise children as Christine Carter writes about on Greater Good > Raising Happiness http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/raising_happiness/post/getting_the_ratios_right/

"As a result, we as parents need to take the lead in raising justice-minded kids and take it upon ourselves to accomplish that goal."

I like this thought. I absolutely agree with the fact that parents need to put a lot of effort in raising justice-minded kids themselves. The result is eventually their personal reward by doing so.

Another way children might learn justice is when they are held accountable for their actions. We want to grow them, disciple them, nurture them, encourage them, but when the clearly set lines have been purposefully crossed, justice can then be exemplified.

I really like that you bring up point 3, to model the behavior for our kids. I think modeling behavior is often overlooked in parenting advice. It is a question that I always ask myself, What are my children learning as they watch me right now?

Great article. My husband and I help out providing free sit down dinners for the community and we always take our kids (10, 8 and 6) to help as well. Sitting down and having dinner with homeless and disadvantaged people/families helps remove the us/them divide and I also hope regularly serving others will become the norm for the kids as they grow up.
