Let’s Do Something Extraordinary This Weekend

Post written by Sherri Kruger. Follow me on Twitter.

I don’t know about you but every time the weekend comes I’m exhausted and I’m not usually inspired to think of fun things to do with the family.

If I do think of something to do then it likely required a bit of advanced planning like making reservations or digging out the mitts and toques to fend off the chill in the morning air. So this week I’m putting a bit of extra effort into what we’ll do this weekend.

Of course this is all subject to change but it might look something like this:

  • breakfast at the local restaurant with hubby and the boys
  • take a short drive to a wildlife sanctuary where hundreds of thousands of Canada geese are currently preparing for their annual migration south. Our sons are really taken by the geese so I ‘m sure they will be more than impressed.
  • 45 minute horse-drawn wagon ride around the marsh
  • home for a nap (likely all of us :)
  • homemade pizza for dinner
  • movie and popcorn to round out the day

That took all of 10 minutes to come up with but I know that if I didn’t give this any thought we wouldn’t be doing it :)

So what about you? Are you going to take a bit of time and plan an extraordinary weekend for you and your family? If you do please share your plans you could very well inspire someone else to do the same!

Last weekend: Saturday and Sunday Sidewalk Film Festival. Attended both days and volunteered for cash desk on Sunday morning.
This coming Saturday is the annual Bluff Park Art Show. I’m picking up Mom and my brother will meet us there. Lots of great art, entertainment, junk food, beer, etc. Probably converge on Mom’s later that day for Pizza and more beer.
“…Sunday…that’s my funday, my I don’t have to runday…”: Long walk, pick up Sunday paper, steaming coffee, Charles Osgood on the tube, crossword in red ink…

  2. WOW! Can I come? lol I want to be with you on Sunday especially that sounds so relaxing. Thanks for sharing it sounds like you have quite the weekend in store :)

Ahh, this is one of my favorite topics — not waiting for the “perfect” time to do something fun! I think I will have to write a blog post on this. My specialty is short little fun things, ones that don’t take a ton of planning or prep work.

This coming weekend, I think we’ll have to go apple picking. Even if it’s just in the neighbor’s yard while she isn’t looking. ;)

That sounds like a great day! Thinking about it ahead of time really does make a big difference. You have inspired me to give it some advanced thought. It is fun to look forward to it too!

  5. Hi Lain
Thanks for adding to the conversation! I just read your post and it’s great. Apple picking sounds like a lot of fun the kids did a bit of that with Nana and Grandpa this year and they loved it. Sounds like you have a great weekend in store.

    Hi Wendy
That’s great I’m glad you’ll take some time to plan a day for this weekend. I definitely like having something fun to look forward to! Have a good one.

Planning a day trip to a neighboring town about 1 1/2 hours away. Shopping and the zoo during the day, and then eating out at our favorite restaurant there – Olive Garden :)

  7. Hi Amy!
This sounds like a great day! I LOVE the Olive Garden but haven’t been there in ages, maybe next weekend :) Enjoy.

  8. I know if I leave things to chance, they won’t happen, plus, I will tend to just default to laying around the house! With mostly grown kids and gradnkids in the mix, if I want us to get together, I have to make plans for it to happen. Once a month on a Sunday we try to all get together at my house, even if I just order pizza!
This upcoming weekend is a huge Greek Festival in Atlanta. We went last year for the first time, and decided to make it a tradition, so we are planning to go again this weekend!

Fri evening to a small local hill, Sat is beach day (my boy loves to get drenched and play in the sand) and eating out. Sun going out on a one day trek (which has three amazing pools on the way)-fun in the sun :)
I’m really looking forward to the week end and it feels good to share my plans here :)

  10. Hi Bernice,
You sound like me “I know if I leave things to chance, they won’t happen, plus, I will tend to just default to laying around the house!” :) I love that idea of once a month dinner with the family. Have a great time at the Greek Festival!

    Hi Sowmya,
Ooooh a beach day that sounds sooo lovely right about now. Have a great time and thanks for sharing your plans! :)

  11. I actually have a weekly reminder on Wednesday to start thinking about what is happening on the weekend. This way it gives me some time to plan a date night or family fun. As you said, I learned if I waited until the weekend nothing happened. This is a date night weekend. As of this morning, dinner reservations were made, movie tickets bought and child care arranged!

  12. Hi Elizabeth,

That’s a great idea to put a reminder in your calendar!Your date night weekend sounds lovely as well! Enjoy!

  13. Joseph Nally says:

Plan: Leave the house with the limitation that we can’t be back in less than three hours.

Outcome: Fun hiking in the nearby foothills and playing on the river’s edge. Finding fuzzy bugs and good smelling wild herbs. Skipping rocks and general smiling and tickling.
